I usually reserve my weekly feature “I See Dumb People” to people in America but sometimes I read about something really dumb elsewhere around the world.
This week’s entry involves a 17-year old teenager who sold his kidney so he could buy an iPhone and iPad. I’ve read about and have actually seen a movie about the sale of organs in Iran. How horrible that may be, the people were doing it to pay off debts and other reasons but never to buy a stupid phone.
Prosecutors have now charged a surgeon, a hospital contractor and brokers who looked for donors online and leased a hospital room for the operation. This apparently is becoming more common. According to what I read, 1.5 million people in China need organ transplants, but only about 10,000 transplants are performed each year.
The defendants received approximately $32,000 while the teenager received $3500.00.
I can’t even begin to imagine how dumb someone has to be to make such a decision. Over a phone???
