After hearing this story, you would think that the Buffalo Board of Education is flush. Not so. It’s actually projecting a $42 million deficit in the next year’s school budget.
Yet, it hasn’t negotiated a contract with the Buffalo Teachers’ Union for nearly a decade and, as a result, the 3,400 teachers continue to enjoy a very sweet deal in their expired contract which permits the taxpayers, of course, to pay for their plastic surgery. Yes, you read that correctly. The taxpayers of New York pay for teachers to undergo botox procedures, liposuction, tummy tucks and there is no deductible! What a deal.
Last year, Buffalo schools spent $5.9 million on plastic surgery. Philip Rumore, the president of the union said, “We’ve told the district from the beginning of negotiations six or eight years ago that we’re willing to give it up, so long as the district comes back to the table with us, it’s gone.” But are they willing to voluntarily give this up? Not on your life. “We’re willing to give it up. All the district has to do is come to the table and negotiate with us. But [we’re] not willing to do it unilaterally.”
Amazing!
