Anyone who’s read my website, knows how much I HATE tax credits.  When someone’s tax credit exceeds the amount he pays in federal income taxes, the money he receives back from the government is welfare.  Period.

Now it seems the IRS has given $4.2 billion in refundable tax credits last year to illegal aliens – four times the amount from five years ago.

The Finance Committee’s report found that, “although the law prohibits aliens residing without authorization in the United States from receiving most federal public benefits, an increasing number of these individuals are filing tax returns claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), a refundable tax credit intended for working families….The payment of federal funds through this tax benefit appears to provide an additional incentive for aliens to enter, reside, and work in the United States without authorization, which contradicts federal law and policy to remove such incentives.”

So, while I commend U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, for looking into the matter and perhaps eventually plugging the drain, the $4.2 billion is already gone and will never be recouped.
